Inspired by Free Software, which challenges conventional practices of authorship, ownership and distribution, this congress explored the implications of those developments for art, visual culture and cultural production in general. Open Congress took place across two days, and was structured through three themes of Governance, Creativity and Knowledge; an array of international and UK participants - artists, theorists, academics and activists - shaped the Congress through simultaneous presentations, discussion, workshops and events. Nicolas Malevé and Laurence Rassel (Constant) were taking part to the Creativity discussion, and brought Constant practices and questions to the debate of porting open source and free licenses to the cultural field. They insisted on the importance of the culture of exchange that goes far beyond a formal choice between pre-packaged licenses.
